Ground Penetrating Radar data analysis and Reporting

Ground penetrating radar data
Unprocessed and processed Ground Penetrating Radar data showing rebar

The data from a Ground Penetrating Radar survey can be analysed and presented in many ways.

Due to the data being displayed in real time, it may be interpreted qualitatively, on site, provided it is of an adequate quality. This is a very rapid and cost effective means. When viewing raw data do not expect the output to look like a section drawing. The data contains information about the targets, but does not resemble them.

If the data is complex, or the client requires a high level of presentation, the results of a Ground Penetrating Radar investigation undertaken by Sandberg are post-processed and presented in a 3D colour report. The post-processing of the investigation results incorporate vertical and horizontal filter options. Any undesired radiowave noise (for example, from the GPR system) is filtered out meaning only ‘clean’ post-processed results are presented. The interactive 3D software allows subsurface objects/targets to be presented for different subsurface depths. From investigation results, cables, pipes and other utilities can be extrapolated and modeled to indicate the spatial extent of the object before excavation work is begun.

The data analysis can concentrate on specific depth ranges, ignoring all other data. This can be used to produce very clear construction detail at depth ranges which are of particular interest to the client. By activating “Movie Mode” in the post-processing software, a 3D ‘fly-through’ of the subsurface is possible; this format clarifies the interpretation of the subsurface. By presenting the results in this way, it enables a user-friendly interface between the client and Sandberg.
